A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY

"Has this mural always been here?"

Listed in the Brussels architectural Heritage Inventory, the house bears witness to the port and working-class history of the Brussels-Charleroi Canal. In the 19th century, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the site was probably used for the (un)loading of goods, as well as for their storage, and for services to workers and boats. Between 1900 and 2015, we sometimes lose track of history, but archive collectors offer us illustrated memories.

Around 1900, Le Phare was then called Les Deux Arcades.
In the 1980s? Le Café des Arcades.
March 2019: Claire Daliers created the maritime mural that now adorns the façade. “The Drunken Ship” inevitably recalls the title of Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “Le Bateau ivre”.
Since 2015, Le Phare has been a café-restaurant, a place for gatherings and celebrations. It has retained its old charm (exposed brickwork, vaulted ceilings) and remains a meeting place. Welcome to eat, chat, and watch the boats go by…
