We only have two weeks left before the Christmas break: it’s time to take stock of your 2017 situation and decide what 2018 will be about. Here are 5 practical things that can help you analyze and get some useful feedback from this year.
1. Your year in reviewRelive 2017 through your datebook or calendar and take note of the milestones that you have gone through. They can be personal or professional. What were your objectives? Did you reach them? If yes, take the time to congratulate yourself or show gratitude for your successes and good times. You can do that in your head or, in writing. Studies show that expressing gratitude allows your brain to experience the moment again. What makes you happy makes you better at what you do. By the way, if you want to know more about happiness and better work, we highly recommend you to watch this TEDx speech. Of course, some less good things happened as well. What can you learn from them? We can always draw some useful and constructive conclusions from failures. That’s what failure is for. They help you learn (example here) and that’s a good thing! So what were your biggest 2017 challenges and failures, and what can you do to change them into positive actions?
2. Update your objectivesNow that you know what went right and wrong and what you can do about it, consider how your personal and professional objectives might have changed. Write them down and have a look at the list that you’ve just made. It is realistic? Will you manage to reach them all? Try to prioritize. Remember that they can be about anything: the works you want to do in your house, the progress that you want to make in your career, the projects you have for your family and friends, etc. And if you’re not into lists, you can try mind mapping. Then, split your main objectives into smaller steps. This will help you determine what you need in order to understand how much time will be required to take each step. All in all, you will get a clearer idea on the timeline needed to attain your objective.
3. Recharge your batteryIt’s almost Christmas time and the end of 2017! In other words, it’s a great opportunity for you to take a step back and analyze your goals with calm and perspective. But don’t forget to take some quality time for yourself. Think about refilling your energy level, as 2018 might shoot off at top speed. So, let’s imagine that you have days off for yourself. What do you want to do with them? Think of all the things and activities that make you happy. It doesn’t have to be big or original. Say, “making Christmas cookies with my children” or “read that book that I’ve always wanted to read but didn’t have the time to”. Isn’t Christmas the perfect time to do those things? Don’t they deserve a special spot in you datebook as much as your professional meetings do?
4. Consider what’s coming aheadThen, take the small steps that you drew from your bigger objectives (see tip nr 2), and try to insert them into your 2018 ideal timeline. This will help you see where you’re going, and don’t forget to plan some personal time for yourself as well. While doing this, think at the kind of year that you want 2018 to be. Consider that if you want it to be different in any way from 2017, you must show the change in the way you consider and schedule the next year. If you want to have more quality time for yourself for example (don’t we all?), book a slot in your diary to this end. You deserve it!
